In this short post we share a Case Equivalent (CE) Conversion Tool that you can use to convert brewer barrels (BBLs) into CE’s.
This can be a useful calculator to figure out the number of CE’s in each package you sell: 2/12 12oz pack cans, 6/4 pack 16oz, 1/6 BBLs, 1/2 BBLs and so on.
In the beer world, a case equivalent (CE) is a standard unit of measurement used to compare and consolidate beer sales across different package types (like bottles, cans, and kegs) into a single, comparable metric.
A case equivalent is a 24 twelve-ounce servings of beer — the same volume as a standard case of 12 oz bottles or cans.
Common Conversions to Case Equivalents:
| Package Type | Volume (oz) | Case Equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| 1 case (24 x 12 oz) | 288 oz | 1.00 CE |
| 1 keg (1/2 barrel, 15.5 gal) | 1,984 oz | ~6.89 CE |
| 1 sixth-barrel keg (5.16 gal) | 660 oz | ~2.29 CE |
| 1 growler (64 oz) | 64 oz | ~0.22 CE |
| 1 pint (16 oz) | 16 oz | ~0.056 CE |
Why It Matters:
- Standardization: Allows breweries, wholesalers, and retailers to track sales, costs, and profitability across formats.
- Pricing & Margins: Makes it easier to compare margins between packaged beer and draft.
- Sales Analysis: Enables a more apples-to-apples comparison when analyzing total volume sold.
